Adelaide University Sport are excited to announce that we have awarded nine scholarships to seven University of Adelaide Students, including three scholarships from People’s Choice Credit Union.

Congratulations to the University of Adelaide’s hard working and talented Adelaide University Sport scholarship recipients for 2020:
• Angus Haines (Athletics)
• Ben Adams (Football)
• Bailey Wightman (Cricket)
• Griffin Knight (Cycling)
• Maeve Plouffe (Cycling)
• Carys Jones (Boat)
• Lily Foster (Diving)

Angus Haines (Athletics): The Bob Heddle Scholarship
Angus currently represents South Australia in orienteering at a national level in national league races, competing for the Junior World Orienteering Championship team, World Orienteering Championship team and World University Orienteering Championship team. Angus joined the Adelaide University Athletics Club in 2018 and has been a part of their committee, currently as Vice-President and previously as President. In this time he has worked on seeking sponsorship, securing a coach, working on their brand identity and increasing membership numbers.

The Bob Heddle Scholarship is awarded to University of Adelaide students, who not only excel in their chosen sport but also give valuable service to their Adelaide University Sport club. Bob was Director of the University Health Service from 1964-1982. During that time, Bob was a member of the University Council and the University Council representative on the Adelaide University Sport Board of Management.

Ben Adams (Football): The Don Stranks Scholarship
Ben competes for the Adelaide University Football Club in their A Grade team in Division 1, and has played 52 games for the club. During his first year at the club he was named the best player in finals, in 2018 he received one of our prestigious Blues Awards and in 2019 he received the Gunning Medal, awarded to the Division 1 best and fairest. Throughout his time as the club, Ben has been involved in running and planning club events including Ladies Day and post season celebrations.

The Don Stranks Scholarship is awarded to University of Adelaide students who excel in their chosen sport of Football or Cricket, but also give valuable service to either the Adelaide University Football or Cricket club. The late Professor Don Stranks was a former Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President of the University and keen supporter of the Football and Cricket clubs

Bailey Wightman (Cricket): The Don Stranks Scholarship
Bailey has been a part of the Adelaide University Cricket Club since 2017, and following success in the A Grade was identified as an up and coming player. In the summer of 2017/18 he played for South Australia’s Under 19’s at the National Championships in Tasmania. Bailey then travelled to England and played for several teams in a number of competitions, before returning to South Australia and making the SACA Emerging Redbacks squad. In the 2018/19 season competing for Adelaide University Cricket Club, Bailey finished the season as second leading wicket taker in the A Grade competition, leading wicket taker for Adelaide University Cricket Club, he made the South Australian Bradman A Grade Competition Team of the Year and made the Adelaide University Cricket Club Team of the Year. Since then he has again played in England during their summer and continued to play for Adelaide University Cricket Club in our summer.

Griffin Knight (Cycling): The Bill Scammell Scholarship
Griffin is an elite cyclist and has been an active member of the Adelaide University Cycling Club for a number of years. He currently competes in the elite class at national and international level in Under 23 competitions. He competes locally in A Grade cyclocross, mountain biking and road cycling. This year, he was signed to one of Australia’s best cyclocross teams called Focus-Pedla, a team supported by Focus Bikes and Pedla cycling clothing. The team includes some of Australia’s best all-round cyclists. Griffin has helped plan and run Adelaide University Cycling Club’s Commuter Cycling Skills courses, and has adapted his advanced level mountain bike skills into a friendly format to assist everyday cyclists. Griffin was also the recipient of a Blue award in 2018.

The Bill Scammell Scholarship is award to a University of Adelaide student, who may not necessarily excel in their chosen sport, but who contribute to the development of University sport in a significant way. Bill is a former Chancellor of the University of Adelaide and supporter of Adelaide University Sport.

Maeve Plouffe (Cycling): The People’s Choice Credit Union Women in Sport Scholarship and The Charles Jessop Scholarship
Maeve is an elite cyclist who has qualified for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo. She is the youngest female track cyclist to be named in the Australian Olympic team in their upcoming campaign, and has been in a number of national teams and squads since 2017. At the 2020 Track Cycling World Championships she won both gold and silver medals competing for Australia. She is a part of the Adelaide University Cycling Club, predominately in a social role, and has also contributed to Adelaide University Sport and the University of Adelaide by taking part in elite athlete forums and social media takeovers. Maeve also received a Blue award in 2018 for her achievements and service.

People’s Choice Credit Union have partnered with Adelaide University Sport to offer three University of Adelaide students inclusive scholarships under the criteria of either Women in Sport, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Athlete or Athlete with a Disability.
The Charles Jessop Scholarship is awarded to a Law student, who not only excels in their chosen sport, but also gives valuable service to their Adelaide University Sport club. Charles is an Adelaide University Sport life member who made significant contributions to the University of Adelaide, Adelaide University Sport & the Law faculty.

Carys Jones (Boat): The People’s Choice Credit Union Women in Sport Scholarship and The Bob Heddle Scholarship
Carys has been a part of the Adelaide University Boat Club for several years and has also competed for the University of Adelaide at UniSport Nationals. From 2016 - 2020 she has been selected in the South Australian Under 23 Women’s Youth Eight team, and won a bronze medal in the 2018 Interstate Regatta event. Carys also competes for the Adelaide University Boat Club in First Grade and Under 21 events at local regattas. Off the water she is a committee member for the club, predominately organising and running camps and events, but also helping with club finances and even running the bar at club events.

Lily Foster (Diving): The People’s Choice Credit Union Women in Sport Scholarship
Lily is an elite 10 metre platform diver with the South Australian Institute of Sport, competing internationally in the Women’s 10 metre Platform event. She starting diving in 2010 and has since competed in a wide variety of elite competitions and state, national and international level. Some of her career highlights to date have been being selected for the 2017 World University Games and coming second at the Australian Nationals in 2018. Lily is a Level 1 Diving Coach and a member of the Diving South Australia Board, always striving to be a positive role model to other athletes with her grace, humility and professionalism.
