Adelaide University Sport is proud to be able to support athletes through our various scholarships. Lachlan Hunter is a member of the Adelaide University Basketball Club and has been awarded one of our President's Scholarships, which is awarded to University of Adelaide students in their first year of study who is also a member of an Adelaide University Sport club.

Lachlan has loved sliding into a sporting environment after moving to Adelaide from Mount Gambier. "I played all my juniors in Mount Gambier and also representing South Australia Country. Since juniors I was a part of the Mount Gambier Pioneers who had a lot of success in the SEABL league. This year making the move to Adelaide to start my university degree, it has worked out for me in that I can continue playing for the Pioneers being accepted into the Adelaide Premier League, as well as for the Adelaide University Basketball Club on Tuesday nights. My passion for the game has always been strong, mainly because of the friendships I have made all along the way in every team I have played with. I just can’t imagine my life without basketball."

Lachlan heard about the Adelaide University Scholarships through our basketball club. "Information was given to me by former Club President Chris McMichael when I inquired about training and playing with Adelaide Uni Basketball Club. I was prompted to apply mainly due to encouragement from Chris, as well as the opportunity to get support with my sport. Moving from the country for my university studies is costly and a huge adjustment, so it was important for me to focus on my study as a priority, as well as continue the things that I enjoy outside of schooling such as basketball."

If one word had to be used to describe why Lachlan believes he deserved the President's Scholarship, it is commitment. "I believe I'm a good recipient as I have been dedicated to basketball, reaching team and personal goals and improving my game from a young age. I'm also committed to giving my best in my university studies and I value the importance of being part of a team and club, and have always believed in giving back to my sport where possible."

Opportunities from Adelaide University Sport to combine study and sport made the transition from Mount Gambier to Adelaide a lot more appealing. "I didn’t want moving to Adelaide for university to make it difficult to follow my sporting goals. Being able to combine both parts of my life is something that can be challenging. To have the support of Adelaide University Sport by way of a scholarship will help this, as well as the obvious financial assistance to be able to train and play. I am also looking forward to having access to the gym facilities to help with my personal training goals."

When asked what advice he'd give to people considering applying for one of our scholarships, Lachlan simply says "go for it". The Adelaide University Sport have been nothing but encouraging and welcoming. I have loved my involvement and am extremely grateful to be recognised and awarded this scholarship.
