AUMT Enjoys Success at 2023 Formula SAE Australasia

Published Mon 22 Jan 2024

In a ground-breaking year of engineering, the Adelaide University Motorsport Team (AUMT) has enjoyed recent success at the 2023 Formula SAE Australasia competition held at Calder Park Raceway in Victoria in December 2023.

In an ambitious move in engineering, AUMT embarked on a transformative journey in 2023, completely revamping its electric vehicle design. The team achieved a milestone by successfully creating a cutting-edge, singular high voltage battery, facilitating a seamless transition to a more compact, slender, and lighter chassis. This marked a pivotal moment in the team's engineering history since their transition to electric in 2018.

This year's competition at the 2023 Formula SAE Australasia competition, witnessed 30 University of Adelaide students compete in a multitude of events against 28 teams from Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Japan. Despite some serious competition, AUMT showcased outstanding teamwork, securing an impressive 9th place overall out of 23 electric vehicles.

The team faced rigorous scrutiny during the design phase, with judges lauding their outstanding engineering design, ranking them 8th in the category, while the team ranked 9th in the Business Presentation. AUMT also showcased exceptional performance in events such as acceleration and autocross.

The pinnacle of AUMT’s success came in the final and ultimate event of the competition – the Endurance event. This event is where the car’s speed and durability are put to the test over an 18-lap race, over 22km of tight turns and straights. AUMT powered through the event, securing the 3rd fastest individual lap, and overall 1st in Endurance, beating runners-up, the University of New South Wales, by 37 seconds! This is the first time AUMT has ever won a dynamic event at the FSAE-A competition in its 22-year history – a huge congratulations to everyone involved!

Jake Herrmann, Team Leader of AUMT said "2023 was a truly remarkable year for AUMT with the win at the Endurance event, and despite the sleepless nights, the team learnt valuable skills, following AUMT's initiative for industry preparedness. We aim to expand on these achievements going into 2024, with a strong focus on training and development of all members."

AUMT look forward to 2024, as they aim to build on this success and refining their electric car design for even greater speed and reliability.

Congratulations to the Adelaide University Motorsport Team on their historic victory and dedication to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle engineering. We are excited to see what this Team accomplish next!
