Beatrice and 'The Dream' to boost High Performance Programs

Published Tue 17 Jan 2023

Adelaide University Sport & Fitness (AUSF) are pleased to welcome Raheim ’The Dream’ Brown as our University Basketball League (UBL) Program Director, and Beatrice Devlyn, as our High Performance Programs Coordinator.

With an impressive background including 10 years of international experience as a professional basketball player, Founder & Managing Director of the Dream Academy, Raheim is a well-respected and long-term member of the international and Australian basketball community. Brown is an exciting recruit and the perfect fit to lead the end-to-end administration of the University of Adelaide University Basketball League (UBL) team, AU Waatu. The UBL is a UniSport Australia Initiative, endorsed by Basketball Australia and supported by the respective State Basketball Associations. Players travel around the country in the semi-professional home and away league.

“I’m extremely excited to join the AUSF team” said Brown, "I look forward to building on the strong foundation that was established last year with the men’s and women’s Teams and generating some new partnerships, engaging with the current players and identifying additional players. I also want to increase student engagement from past and present as we enter into the second year for the AU Waatu.”

General Manager of AUSF, Michelle Wilson said, “'Waatu' is Kaurna language for coming together for a common cause. Both of our new recruits will join our leadership team with a wealth of industry experience and knowledge that will help improve program delivery, building engagement and awareness, creating partnerships, and ensuring high performance sports outcomes for athletes. I can’t wait to see what this 'Dream Team' can achieve!"

Both men’s and women’s rounds are played mid-week across the country from March to May, culminating in a finals event to determine Australia’s number one basketball university. The AU Waatu Men and Women's teams entered the UBL as the first South Australian University team in 2022 with the men’s team narrowly missing out on finals. In 2023, we are excited to improve on this solid foundation.

Our new High Performance Programs Coordinator, Beatrice Devlyn, joins us with an equally impressive sporting background. Originally from Western Australia, Devlyn has completed an undergraduate degree and honours in Sport and Exercise Movement Science and a Masters in Strength and Conditioning. Devlyn has worked in and around high performance sport for the best part of a decade, including playing at the highest level in the AFLW for 4 seasons and working with the SA Sports Institute. Devlyn has a strong appreciation for what a student high performance program entails and understands what dual career athletes require to juggle the demands of University, sport and life. Devlyn’s role will see her take responsibility for the administration of the AUSF Elite Athlete Club and Pathway to Performance and scholarship programs.

When asked what she was most excited for in her new role, Devlyn stated, “I am excited to further develop our Pathway to Performance initiatives and supporting the AU Roma’s Rugby program. I look forward to grow our long term relationships with our clubs and support students to ensure they’re able to excel within their chosen sports!”.

Expressions of interest are now open for our Elite Athlete’s program. New and returning elite athletes at the University of Adelaide are invited to our Elite Athlete breakfast to learn about scholarships and grants as well as UBL, University 7s, professional development opportunities and the Perks and Partners program.

The 2023 AU Waatu will have trials for the upcoming season in January - February 2023. You can find out more and register your interest here.
