Celebrating Women in Sport Brunch Returns Amidst Growing Spotlight on Women’s Sport

Published Mon 03 Mar 2025

With women’s sport dominating headlines across Australia, Adelaide University Sport and Fitness in partnership with Sport SA are proud to present the 2025 Celebrating Women in Sport Brunch on Thursday, March 20, at SkyCity Adelaide.

Now in its fifth year, the Celebrating Women in Sport Brunch has established itself as a key event on the Adelaide sporting calendar, bringing together industry leaders, athletes, and advocates to discuss progress, challenges, and the future of women in sport. Hosted by media personality Ali Clarke, the 2025 edition promises to be another great event, providing a platform for powerful conversations and meaningful connections.

The event comes at a time when female athletes and teams are making history, from record-breaking crowds at Matildas matches to increased investment in women’s leagues. At the same time, recent controversy surrounding a radio commentator’s derogatory remarks about women’s sport has reignited discussions about respect, representation, and the challenges female athletes continue to face. Now more than ever, conversations around gender equality, leadership, and opportunity in sport are front and centre.

Adelaide University Sport and Fitness CEO, Michelle Wilson said: "Women’s sport in Australia is in the spotlight like never before. Now’s the time to build on this momentum and create lasting change. The Celebrating Women in Sport Brunch is about having real conversations, celebrating progress, and pushing for more."

This year’s brunch aligns with the UN’s International Women’s Day theme, “March Forward,” marking three decades since the Beijing Declaration for gender equality. Attendees will gain valuable insights from an inspiring speaker lineup, including:

Michelle Redfern (keynote speaker) - A powerhouse in both workplace and sports leadership, Michelle is a passionate advocate for women’s advancement and a trailblazer in implementing real, actionable DEI strategies. Her keynote, ‘GAME ON: LEAD BOLDLY TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD,’ promises to ignite inspiration, challenge us to take bold action, and empower us to drive lasting change.

Guests will also hear from three panellists as they share their insights, experiences, and perspectives in an inspiring discussion, moderated by Ali Clarke.

Tanya Hosch (panellist) - Executive General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy at the Australian Football League (AFL) and in 2021 was the South Australian - Australian of the Year.

Matilda McNamara (panellist) - Adelaide United Football Club player, has played for AGF in Denmark, made one Matildas appearance and is a student at the University of Adelaide.

James Kay (panellist) - PhD candidate researching ways to increase female participation in community sport, particularly among adolescents, and is passionate about using sport to promote gender equality.
