Lachie Hunter and Nick Fassos are two of many key players driving the Adelaide University Waatus to a history making UBL debut season.
Civil engineering student Lachie Hunter, who concurrently plays for NBL1 team West Adelaide Bearcats has dominaing force for the men's side this season.
As one of the Waatu’s key on court leaders, Lachie’s imposing presence as centre has proven difficult to deal with for opposing teams, ranking fifth in the competition for total point.
His defensive work rate also means that he leads the competition for total blocks, racking up eleven so far.
Having competed previously for the University as part of Uni Nationals, Lachie Hunter co-captains the Waatu in 2022 alongside Nick Fassos, a fellow Civil Engineering student who also plays for the Sturt Sabres in the NBL1.
Another key figure on the court, Nick’s offensive play has captured the attention of the competition and left opposing players stumped.
He is averaging a respectable fourteen points per game, after a season-defining performance of thirty-four points against UWA early in the competition.
Their combined leadership has brought together a mix of new and familiar faces to the men’s side, leading to a team which has ‘come together for a common goal’–the meaning of Waatu in the Kaurna language.
A series of key wins across the season have put the Waatu in good stead for a spot in finals going forward, but a spot in the top four is yet to be solidified.
Regardless of the results going forward, the Waatu’s inaugural season has brought together a squad who put together an impressive first season.
