Nominees announced for the 116th Annual Blues Awards…

Adelaide University Sport and Fitness is excited to confirm the nominees for the 116th Annual Blues Awards, set to take place on Tuesday, 29 October 2024.

Nominations have now been announced for the following awards: Patron’s Cup, Jessop Shield, Bennett Shield, Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the year (Non-student).

In contrast to the Blues, Half Blues and Club Letters (for service and competition) which are chosen by the Blues Committee, recipients of the above awards are chosen by the AUSF Board of Management from nominations received from members and AUSF staff.

These awards are presented at the Blues Awards dinner at the end of October.

Patron’s Cup


The Patron's Cup is awarded to a club which had an outstanding achievement in the past 12 months. It is presented in recognition of Professor McWha's support of Adelaide University Sport during his 10-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor. 

The Nominees for 2024 are: 


Fencing
The Adelaide University Fencing Club achieved significant success across novice, veteran, and open competitions. Highlights include multiple 1st place finishes at UniSport Nationals, Fencing SA Novice State Championships, and international veteran events. These achievements showcase the club’s growth and excellence on both national and global stages.


Judo
The Adelaide University Judo Club achieved outstanding success, winning multiple medals at national and state events. Highlights include silver medals at the Queensland International Judo Open, Judo Australia School Nationals, and podium finishes at the Canberra, Sydney, and Melbourne International Opens, as well as Judo SA Winter, State, and Autumn Championships.


Boat
The Adelaide University Boat Club earnt multiple medals at UniSport Nationals and international competitions, including silver and bronze at the U23 World Rowing Championships and bronze at the U19 World Rowing Championships. Domestically, they ranked 8th at the Australian Rowing Championships and won 20 golds at SA Rowing Championships.


Athletics
The Adelaide University Athletics Club achieved impressive results, including medals at the Athletics SA Cross Country Championships, a bronze in the U20 Men's 10 km State Championships, silver in the U18 1500m Australian Championships, and multiple medals at the State Track & Field Championships, with 6 gold and 5 silver.


Jessop Shield


The Jessop Shield is award to the Club of the Year, with less than 50 members. It is presented in recognition of Charles Jessop, one of the first life members.

The Nominees for 2024 are: 


Swimming 
The Adelaide University Swimming Club worked hard to improve governance, updating their Blues Awards criteria and ABN. They strengthened relationships with key stakeholders, secured a new training location, and hired a coach. Leaders completed First Aid and coaching training, while regular social events, member feedback, and volunteer recognition helped sustain the club's culture.

Kendo
The Adelaide University Kendo Club enhanced governance and financial management, supported leadership development, and boosted membership through O'Week promotions and free shinai for beginners. Committed to inclusivity, the club welcomed diverse members, engaged in on-campus events, and achieved notable success at the South Australia Kendo Championship.

Fencing
The Adelaide University Fencing Club made significant governance improvements and developed leadership skills, strengthening relationships with stakeholders. By promoting beginner-friendly sessions, they doubled their membership and fostered inclusivity, especially for international students. Their success in competitions and grant applications for equipment upgrades highlights their commitment to community involvement and competitive excellence.
 


Bennett Shield


The Bennet Shield is awarded to the Club of the Year, with more than 50 members. It is presented in recognition of Richard Bennett, one of the first life members.


The Nominees for 2024 are: 


Volleyball
The Adelaide University Volleyball Club implemented governance improvements and member engagement initiatives, establishing sub-committees and an Unacceptable Behaviour Policy. New coaching accreditations and diverse activities fostered inclusivity and membership growth. With strong performances in competitions and enhanced social media promotion, the club celebrated impressive achievements and maintained a welcoming culture.


Judo
The Adelaide University Judo Club is nominated for its governance and community engagement in 2024. With a new Public Officer, it initiated policy reviews and maintained strong stakeholder relationships. Eight senior members pursued coaching accreditation, while a vibrant dojo culture and diverse training sessions fostered social interaction and inclusivity, boosting membership and community involvement.

Rugby
In 2024, the Club implemented governance improvements, including a strategic plan and risk policies, while enhancing record-keeping. Strong stakeholder relationships were maintained through communication and events. Membership grew through free trials and campus promotions, with inclusivity efforts for diverse groups. The Club celebrated successes on and off the field, achieving financial growth and recognition for members.
 


 

Coach of the Year 


The Coach of the Year recognises our highly skilled coaches and the influential impact they have on our athletes.

The Nominees for 2024 for Elite and Development are: 

Scott Freer, Lachlan Coppick, Kyle Vucetic - AU Waatu
This year, a fresh coaching team elevated our AU Waatu team for the University Basketball League program, leading the women to their most successful season and the men to finals, narrowly losing to Melbourne University. At UniNationals, the men finished 6th (Division 1), with strong showings in 3x3 competitions. Over 120 students trialled, reflecting the program’s growth.

Tony Gunn - Adelaide University Hockey Club
Tony coached both second grade men's and women's teams in 2024, leading both to finals and the men to the grand final. His coaching transformed their play, and he actively supported coaching, umpiring, and operations. Recognised for his dedication, Tony was named 2024 Adelaide University Hockey Coach of the Year.


 

Volunteer of the Year

Non-Student


Adelaide University Sport, The University of Adelaide and affiliated clubs would not be where they are today without the assistance and support of our volunteers. We recognise these very important people in our sporting community, with the Volunteer of the Year award.

The Nominees for 2024 are: 


Brooke Willshire - Adelaide University Boat Club
Brooke is nominated for her exceptional leadership and dedication to the Adelaide University Boat Club. A former elite rower, she has served on the club's Advisory Board since 2019, driving initiatives like a new Constitution and licensing requirements. Despite a demanding career, Brooke has led the club to state and national successes, serving as a role model for female members.

Sophia Costello- Adelaide University Rugby Club
Sophia is an invaluable asset to the Adelaide University Rugby Club, serving as U7s coach, player, assistant manager, and club captain, while also managing canteen operations and recruitment efforts. Her leadership has improved club culture, increased revenue, and strengthened community bonds. Despite many roles and being a single parent, her dedication drives the club's success.

Anthony Smit- Adelaide University Judo Club
Anthony is nominated for his outstanding volunteer work at Adelaide University Judo Club. As a key committee member, he enhances club promotion through social media and video content. Anthony also organises post-training BBQs and social events, fostering community spirit, and has been crucial in driving membership growth and retention.
