Finalists confirmed for 2022 Blues Awards

Adelaide University Sport and Fitness is excited to confirm the finalists of the 2022 Annual Blues Awards, set to take place on Tuesday, 6 December.

Finalists have been confirmed for the following awards: Patron’s Cup, Jessop Shield, Bennett Shield, Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the year (Student and Non-student).

Patron’s Cup

The Patron’s Cup is awarded to a club which had outstanding on field achievements in the past 12 months. Presented in recognition of Professor McWha’s support of Adelaide University Sport during his 10-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

The Finalists are:

Baseball

Finishing sixth overall after the Baseball association combined this year’s division one and two leagues. The Adelaide University Baseball Club qualified for the Division two finals and against quality opponent, were crowned Division Two champions.

Hockey

After a stellar season, the Adelaide University Hockey Club’s Women’s Premier team claimed the Metro One competition. They defeated Port Adelaide 2-1 in the Grand Final, with Jenna Burston being named Player of the Final.

Boat

Another successful year for the Adelaide University Boat Club, especially at the 2022 State Championships. Both the men and women combined to take out 11 of the 17 Open Championships and 5 out of 10 Under 21 Championships.

Judo

The Adelaide University Judo club enjoyed a great year in 2022, taking out gold in the National Schools Competition. At the Australian National Judo Championships, the club walked away with three golds, five silvers and two bronzes. They also enjoyed success at the Melbourne and Sydney International Opens respectfully.

 

Jessop Shield

The Jessop Shield is award to the Club of the Year, with less than 50 members. It is presented in recognition of Charles Jessop, one of the first life members.

Swimming

The Adelaide University Swimming Club experienced rapid membership growth in 2022, has put significant effort into its social media presence as well as facing and overcoming a number financial and governance challenges.

Water Ski

A challenging year for the Adelaide University Water Ski Club with recent floods and change in committee. Despote this they excelled in member engagement throughout 2022.

Baseball

With securing the Division Two title, the Adelaide University Baseball Club have looked at innovative way to engage members and have an outstanding group of volunteers supporting the club.

 

Bennett Shield

The Bennet Shield is awarded to the Club of the Year, with more than 50 members. It is presented in recognition of Richard Bennett, one of the first life members.

The Finalists are:

Judo

With the introduction of their Dynamic Balance Program, the Adelaide University Judo Club has expanded its membership offerings. It also enjoyed success at State and National Championships.

Touch

The Adelaide University Touch Club implemented a succession plan for the future of support committees in 2022. It continued being one of the most highly engaged clubs on campus and committing to a several training and development workshops.

Basketball

In 2022, the Adelaide University Basketball Club had a rapid increase in memberships reaching over 200 members. They showed support to the inaugural University Basketball League competition.

Rugby

The Adelaide University Rugby Club had a big 2022, with the club celebrating their 90th Anniversary. A numberof women's players were selected for the state team and the Under 12 team won the premiership. 

 

Coach of the Year

The Coach of the Year recognises our highly skilled coaches and the influential impact they have on our athletes.

The Finalists are:

Michael Headland (Judo)

Head coach of the Adelaide University Judo Club who has guided his team to success at State and National competitions in 2022.

Sam Morton (Boat)

An influential coach for the Adelaide University Boat Club, enjoying success at UniNationals with four medals and State Championships with 14 titles.

 

Volunteer of the Year

Adelaide University Sport, The University of Adelaide and affiliated clubs would not be where they are today without the assistance and support of our volunteers. We recognise these very important people in our sporting community, with the Volunteer of the Year award.

The Finalists are:

Student

Madeeha Siddiqui

A dedicated volunteer to the Adelaide University Sport and Fitness, fulfilling the roles as Team Manager and Game Day Commissioner for the university’s high-performance Basketball team, the AU Waatus. She was also involved in the on-campus social sport program as a student ambassador. 

Trang Huyen Dang

Alongside other voluntary work for the university, Trang has been a dedicated and passionate student ambassador for our on-campus social sport program. She attended the UniSport MyWay training in Melbourne and has since assisted in the planning, delivery, and promotion of the program.

Non-Student

Jemina Deane

President of the Adelaide University Hockey Club, she has been nominated for her contribution to increasing student engagement and support of the West Beach Recreation Hub rollout. She has also led the club’s relocation from its former club rooms to the new facility and encouraging its use on game day and trainings.

Luke McAlister

A role model for all students, who has volunteered his time across various student engagement events for the Adelaide University Cricket Club. Luke contributes to the Rock Up Cricket Program and was the a coordinator for the ATCA from 2014-2022, organising lower level competitions.
