After a promising first week of competition, both our Waatu men’s and women’s teams travel to New South Wales to take on The University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney in what was set to be two thrilling double-headers.

Last week, the first round of the UBL saw our men’s team get off to a perfect start, with a 92 – 71 win over UWA Maali . Strong individual performances from Nick Fassos, Lachie Hunter and Brian Cranna saw the men dominate play with an overall conversion rate of 54% for three-points made.

The Waatu's looked particularly strong on the counter, scoring 25 points from turnovers over the course of the match. Nicholas Floyd and Rhys Hohenstein kept the West competitive, with a total of 14 points between the two forwards. Ultimately the Waatu's came out ahead, with Nick Fassos named as the MVP.

For the women’s side, a series of unlucky rebounds left the Waatu's walking away with a 60 – 62 defeat by the UWA Maali. Despite strong  a strong first half performance, UWA proved too good from within the arch and were able to take the win. MVP Evie Lovell, Lateasha Lambert and Abby Lowman all had a big game, sharing a bag of 14 points between them.

Away from home in New South Wales, the Round 2 double header for both our men’s and women’s sides proved an uphill battle. The men’s side went down 98 – 54 against the University of Sydney, and 96 – 48 against the University of Technology Sydney.

Our women’s team also had a tough week at the office, coming up second best to the University of Sydney 90 – 36 and 77 – 29 to the University of Technology Sydney.

After the end of round two, the Waatu women's are sitting ninth on the ladder, with the men’s team in eighth spot.

Looking at the fixtures ahead, both teams will face the University of the Sunshine Coast Spartans in Queensland on Tuesday the 5th of April, with the men’s fixture set for tip off at 12:30pm ACST. The women’s team will follow that up with a 2:30pm ACST start in what’s set to be a great contest.
