The University of Adelaide take home a swag of medals at the 2023 UniSport Nationals

It has been an extremely successful 2023 UniSport Nationals event for our University of Adelaide (UoA) athletes, bringing home 11 medals from the week-long event on the Gold Coast (Kombumerri), Queensland from 23-29 September.

General Manager of Adelaide University Sport, Michelle Wilson, was delighted with the increase in participant numbers and the performances from our UoA athletes.

“Our athletes have represented the UoA in the best way possible against the best universities in the country and I am impressed by how well we have gone,” Michelle said.

“To have 125 athletes competing in 13 diverse sports is a great result and a big increase on participation from the 2022 UniSport Nationals in WA. I’ve seen some impressive team work and camaraderie throughout the week and I love seeing how sport brings people together. New friendships have been formed and these students have had the opportunity to represent their University on a national stage.”

“We look forward to competing again next year and bringing home more gold!”

UoA started the week impressively, with a double delight for fencer, Roshan Chandran, who claimed gold in the individual men’s epee event for the second year running. It was a great effort by the fencing team overall who finished fourth in the men’s epee and fifth in the men’s sabre teams event.

There was medal joy for our judo competitors with Olivia Hobby and Valen Kostich who both took home bronze medals in their respective events.

The UoA rowing team claimed two gold medals (two of those back-to-back) and two bronze medals. The men’s lightweight fours are back to back champions after winning gold last year at the Uni Nationals in Perth and it was back to back gold for Australian team representative, Nick Blackman in the men’s single scull. The men’s eight team and coxed four both improved on their 2022 results where they finished with bronze medals to take home silver medals in 2023.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams both brought home medals. The men’s team were undefeated throughout the tournament in division one and had a nail-biting fight to the finish line, receiving a silver medal after they went down 60-53 in the Grand Final against La Trobe University. The women’s team also had a great tournament and took home a bronze medal after a 53-45 win over the University of Queensland in the division two bronze medal playoff game.

Our men’s indoor volleyball team won a bronze medal in division two after they had a 3-1 win against the University of NSW.

Both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams claimed silver medals. Sienna Haxton and Alina Tairli lost 2-1 against Flinders University in the division two women’s gold medal playoff and Koan Bouchard and Oliver Riessen went down 2-0 against Griffith University in the division two men’s gold medal playoff.

It was pleasing to see the return of a men’s and women’s Rugby 7s team after several years hiatus from competing at the UniSport Nationals. Although not placing this year, it was great to see an Adelaide team represented in this competition. We also wish to recognise the following teams, who didn’t place, but still put in an impressive effort and represented UoA with pride! These teams include, men’s table tennis, mixed lacrosse 5’s, mixed ultimate frisbee, mixed touch football and mixed netball.

Overall, it was a fantastic effort from everyone involved – a big congratulations to all UoA athletes who took part and for their remarkable achievements. We look forward to competing again at the 2024 UniSport Nationals in Canberra!
