Winter Success and Summer Anticipation…

Published Wed 11 Oct 2023

This year has so far proven to be highly fruitful for several Adelaide University Sport Clubs, marked by record-breaking achievements, inaugural appearances in finals, and triumphant premiership victories.

Below, you'll find a roundup of winter highlights (for some of our clubs) and a glimpse of what to anticipate in the approaching summer season.

Adelaide University Boat Club

In a remarkable display of skill, determination and teamwork, the AU Boat Club have etched their name in the history books by clinching all four Rowing SA titles in the 2022/2023 season.

This oar-some achievement marks a momentous occasion not only for the club but also for the entire rowing community.

The men's and women's teams and masters state premierships were also won by AU Boat Club.

This is the first time since Rowing SA began in 1894 that an SA club has won all four premierships in a single season.

Adelaide University Baseball Club

Successful recruitment has led to a great 2023 season for the AU Baseball Club.

They were able to field five teams in the 2023 Winterball competition, two more than 2022, and the largest number of teams in many years. Several new players have already recommitted for next season.

Of those five teams, four made the finals in their division, and one made the grand final, ultimately losing in the last innings after a tied game for seven innings!

Some highlights from the season were Nic Borrello pitching a "no-hitter", and five players making State representative teams in baseball and softball.

Adelaide University Hockey Club (AUHC) – Women’s and Men’s Winter Wrap

The dedication, teamwork and hard work has paid off for the AUHC women’s side in 2023 with their first finals appearance in a few years.

Whilst it ended in heartbreak with a 4-3 elimination final loss against Adelaide that went to penalties, there was plenty to be proud of with how the season went and the progress they had made.

The men’s team had a tough season and finished with a 0-21 record. They were competitive against the top sides but failed to make the most of their opportunities.

Adelaide University Cricket Club (AUCC) Summer Preview

There's been a bit of change in the AUCC programs, with the appointment of new first grade coach Michael Silvy, while Henry Cameron has come over from NZ to look after the women's' program.

In a boost for the club, former Australian test cricketer and SA Redback Joe Mennie has come onboard as the bowling coach.

In a fantastic addition for the club they secured the Adelaide Oval nets for a few sessions during the preseason, enabling the whole club, from first to eighth grade and the entire women's' program, to train together once a week.

Adelaide University Gridiron Winter Wrap

The 2022 season was an important one for Gridiron SA, particularly the AU Hogs, who, after a devastating grand final loss in 2021 to the Uni SA Eagles, were highly focused on reclaiming the premiership title.

The Hogs charged through the season undefeated, and ultimately crushed the Uni SA Eagles 31-13, in a highly anticipated and exciting Grand Final!

Making this even more remarkable was the fact they were able to do this whilst facing some tough challenges including the retirements of key players and players taking time off.

The Hogs have welcomed new players to the ranks earlier this year, both experienced and brand new. The team has eye on the future and encourages any new and interested students at AU to join the club.

Being a potential final-year for head coach Mark Lieberenz, the Hogs hope to maintain their championship reputation, to develop a strong team, and play great football through the season.

The season kicked off in style with a grand final rematch on Saturday September 16 against the UniSA Eagles.

Adelaide University Ultimate Frisbee Preview

Ultimate runs year-round, with all social leagues following the semesters, and their state league running in autumn and spring.

January to April is the elite single gendered season, while August to October is the elite mixed season.

Over the summer, there is usually a casual beach league called "Summer Fling".

There is also a single day beach charity tournament called "Big Kevs". Last year $2809.59 was raised. The winning team can choose the charity it's donated to.

They recently became the first of any SA ultimate club for over five years to compete in the UniSport Nationals.

Adelaide University Touch Footy Winter Wrap-Up

The 2023 winter season at city touch has been a tumultuous time for the AU Touch Club.

The teams fought hard week after week overcoming the usual exam, flu, and cold weather stress.

Coupled with the dreaded 9pm games and an unusually wet winter, the teams pushed through all of this to have a very successful season.

It was a university derby in the A-grade final with the AUTC Eagles coming out on top.

Unfortunately, the AUTC Falcons, Hawks and Bin Chickens all just missed out on a final victory.

The Waite competition held during the summer months is an amazing competition run on the best fields in the state.

They routinely have 30 teams of dedicated individuals and welcome many newcomers to the sport.

Waite offers a family-friendly atmosphere for everyone to develop their game skills, and they don’t expect this season to be any different.

They are gearing up for the hottest summer yet, and with new and improved bar facilities, they are hoping this season will be the most successful to date.

Adelaide University Lacrosse Club Winter Wrap

The AU Lacrosse Club had an amazing winter season.

Whilst they were unable to field a men’s team and the women’s team had a slow start, they grew from strength to strength throughout the season.

The new players were quick to grasp the game and fitted in well with the rest of the team.

The women’s team finished the season second on the ladder.

Unfortunately, they weren’t to home the ultimate prize with the Glenelg Blackhawks defeating AU in a nail-biting grand final.

Outside of playing, they hosted the inaugural past players Day bringing old and new players together to support the women’s team.
